Strategic enhancement of skillset of academics and researchers at CPUT
The RTI Staff Development Unit is mandated to facilitate development and strengthen the scholarly academic identities of researchers at CPUT. This means that the Unit must enable researchers to i)achieve science excellence through the practices of research ethics, integrity, and responsible conduct of research increase; ii)increase higher degrees in particular PhDs; iii)publish research in reputable and increasingly high-quality journals iv)establish their research niches; v) find funding to drive their research projects; vi)establish partnerships (intra-, inter- and extra-institutional) for excellent research; vi) increase NRF rated researchers; vii)funding purposes and comply with all facets of academic citizenry and developed and implement evidence-based strategic developmental interventions and support to all CPUT staff. The RTI Staff Development Unit mandate is executed using a series of workshops, writing retreats, fostering networks across disciplines, and sharing academic experiences at various institutional levels. The ultimate goal is to have a cadre of highly skilled and motivated scholars who feel supported and valued by the institution and would contribute to the institutions envisaged higher number of staff with PhD qualifications, increased research output, skilled postgraduate supervisor resource base, and mentors for their colleagues.
Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience- A Doctoral degree in Social or Scientific Sciences or equivalent qualification
- At least five (5) years experience staff research development and five (5) years of experience in research ethics and research integrity (Responsible Conduct of Research)
- Higher Education experience is advantageous
- Experience in managing the University Capacity Development Grant programme is also desirable.
1. Staff Development:
- Identify the research development needs of staff and design tailored training programs or initiatives.
- Organise workshops, seminars, and writing retreats
- Coordinate with external experts, organisations, or consultants to provide specialised training
- Continuous monitoring and evaluation of developmental programmes and initiative
- Plan long-term and short-term strategic Skills Development objectives
2. Mentorship and Partnership Programme:
- Career and transformation-focused programmes and initiatives
- Create and establish partnerships and collaboration aligned with CPUT Vision 2030
- Identify and disseminate funding, award, and advancement programmes
- Promote and support transdisciplinary research focused on the CPUT Vision 203
3. Promoting the Responsible Conduct of Research:
- Promoting responsible conduct of research via comprehensive training initiatives, policy and compliance
- Manage research ethics misconduct investigations.
- Development and training of Faculty Research Committee members
4. Policy and Resource Management
- Develop and implement policies and best practices for staff development within the Directorate Research Development
- Manage budgets for staff development programs, training, and related activities (e.g. UCDG programme).
- Ensure compliance with institutional, regulatory, and funding agency policies related to staff training and development.
5. Communication, Performance management and Reporting
- Prepare regular reports on development activities, staff progress, and the impact of initiatives for senior leadership and stakeholders.
- Serve as the point of contact for staff inquiries regarding career growth, training opportunities, and development resources.
- Stay updated on industry trends and best practices relevant to research staff development.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of development programs through feedback, surveys, and performance metrics.
- Adapt strategies based on feedback and changing organisational needs.
- Database development and maintenance
- Experience in staff research development strategies
- Proficiency in monitoring and evaluation methodologies
- Understanding of career stages
- Strong Management and Leadership skills
- Coordination and Collaboration abilities
- Knowledge of University policies and guidelines
- Able to organising and managing sustainable mentoring and coaching programmes
- Professional Engagement
- Financial Management
- Understanding of institutional, national, and international developmental goals
- Competence as an NRF Designated Authority and the NRF Connect platform
- Knowledge, training and experience in all aspects of responsible research conduct
- Function of a Research Ethics Committee
- Experience and managing investigating/reporting of research misconduct
- Understanding of the MIS (UCDG) reporting system
