Metallurgist (Automotive Industry)

Job Purpose:

To provide metallurgical expertise in the development, optimization, and quality assurance of automotive components, with a focus on aluminium materials, press and die processes, and manufacturing efficiency. The role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure product performance, durability, and compliance with industry standards.

Key Responsibilities

1. Material Development and Optimization:

  • Conduct metallurgical analysis and testing of aluminium alloys and other materials used in automotive components.
  • Develop and optimize material specifications for press and die processes to enhance product performance and durability.

2.Press and Die Expertise:

  • Provide technical support for press and die operations, ensuring optimal material selection and process parameters.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to material behaviour during forming, stamping, and extrusion processes.
  • Quality Assurance:
  • Perform failure analysis and root cause investigations for metallurgical-related defects in automotive components.
  • Implement quality control measures to ensure compliance with industry standards (e.g., ISO, ASTM, OEM specifications).

3.Process Improvement:

  • Collaborate with production and engineering teams to improve manufacturing processes, reduce costs, and enhance product quality.
  • Recommend and implement new technologies or methodologies to improve metallurgical processes.

4.Research and Development:

  • Stay updated on advancements in metallurgy, particularly in aluminium applications for the automotive industry.
  • Lead or contribute to R&D projects focused on lightweight materials and sustainable manufacturing practices.

5.Documentation and Reporting:

  • Prepare technical reports, specifications, and documentation for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Present findings and recommendations to management and clients.

Qualifications and Experience:

Education:

  • Bachelors degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
  • A Masters degree or additional certifications (e.g., Six Sigma, NDT) will be an advantage.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in metallurgy, preferably within the automotive industry.
  • Proven experience with aluminium materials and their applications in automotive manufacturing.
  • Strong knowledge of press and die processes, including forming, stamping, and extrusion.
  • Experience with failure analysis, root cause investigation, and quality assurance methodologies.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in metallurgical testing techniques (e.g., SEM, EDS, XRD, hardness testing).
  • Familiarity with automotive industry standards and OEM requirements.
  • Knowledge of CAD/CAM software and simulation tools for process optimization is a plus.
