Senior Journalist

Were expanding our newsroom footprint in Nelson Mandela Bay and are looking for an experienced, versatile Senior Reporter to help lead our reporting efforts in the region.

• At least seven years of journalism experience, preferably with some focus on education;

• Existing network of sources in Nelson Mandela Bay and the Eastern Cape.

• Journalism/tertiary qualification or equivalent experience;

• Drivers licence and willingness to travel within the province and country;

• Exceptional news sense and editorial judgement;

• Exceptional writing skills and attention to detail;

• Photographic/visual/multimedia skills are an advantage;

• Impeccable general knowledge and curiosity about the world; and

• Ability to work virtually and meet deadlines.

• Experience with data journalism, investigations, and multimedia reporting.

• Enthusiasm for collaborative reporting and editorial innovation.

• Report on key issues affecting Nelson Mandela Bay and the Eastern Cape, including local politics, governance, service delivery, the environment, social justice, and more while keeping a keen eye out for stories that inspire and provide hope.
• Develop and maintain a strong network of sources across government, civil society, communities, and business.
• Write investigative pieces and breaking news stories based on investigations.
• Identify and pursue emerging trends and underreported issues in the region.
• Work closely with editors and the wider newsroom to shape regional coverage that resonates nationally.
• Contribute to Daily Mavericks mission of fearless, independent journalism.
• Uphold the highest standards of accuracy, fairness, and ethical reporting.
• Collaborate with local and international investigative journalism networks.
