Location: Pretoria REPORTS TO: Senior Management PRIMARY POSITION PURPOSE The Site Laboratory Manager is responsible for the control of quality, procedures, methods, equipment & personnel on his site. The laboratory Manager takes responsibility for the test results produced in the site laboratory and on-site tests as well as the sampling of materials on-site. He is also responsible for safety on his site. Trained personnel as well as staff still under training assist the site Laboratory Manager. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- The coordination and implementation of the Quality Manual and recommendation of possible improvements of the manual
- To manage the Quality System on site-Check the effectiveness of the system and make recommendations for possible improvements of system.
- To make sure that equipment is identified and valuable calibration - and/or verification certificates are available on site.
- Check the influence of the environmental conditions on test results.
- Storage of duplicate samples and arranging a proficiency-testing program.
- Interpretation of the test results. Deal with non-conformances. Do corrective actions and preventative actions.
- Improvements: To identify potential sources of NCRS and implementation of additional control measures.
- Safe storage of equipment not in use.
- To make sure that overall housekeeping is attended to
- Record keeping: Daily weekly and monthly records of the results as required by the quality system and for reporting on the monthly EIU (Equivalent Indicator Units) form, as well as information required for the monthly Materials and Laboratory reports.
- Safe filing of test results (Hard copies and computer backup on a weekly basis -a CD copy to the RE once a month and a CD copy to Soillab every 3 months).
- Internal audit conducting or overseeing internal audits.
- Vertical assessment -Witnessing of tests while carried out by testers.
- Use correct lab worksheets and reporting sheets
- Testing according to correct standards - use correct test methods
- Knowledge of test methods -understanding of test procedures and definitions
- Make sure equipment is functional, and meets specifications to allowable tolerances
- Check equipment according to requirements of the quality system and manufacturer manuals-also new equipment- check to allowable tolerances. Report any defects to the Field -Lab Manager (C De Bruin)
- Check equipment for wear and safety requirements
- To make sure cleaning of equipment is looked after on a daily base and after use.
- Program for servicing of machines as per drawn up a program or to the manufacturers requirements
- Search for state-of-the-art techniques and observe actions of personnel and equipment to reduce risks of NCRS and draw up a universal action plan and corrective actions
- Organize personnel planning within resources and capacity (equipment and personnel)
- Liaise with Testers, Senior Materials technicians or RE on daily operations.
- Deal with complaints
- Ensure availability of personnel job descriptions on site.
- Keep a record and maintain the competency of testers. Identify training needs and evaluations for competency
- Review test results and check calculations.
- Reporting test results
- Keep weather records and submit the summary to the RE on a weekly basis.
- Assist Senior Materials Technician with build plans.
- Control site vehicles (Check Log-Books and drivers handling of the vehicles) Submit monthly log sheets to RE.
- Arrange special testing
- Keep a record of personnel s time, leave, and absence
- Control all overtime - approve and sign overtime documents
- Understanding of company policies and procedures applicable to the work environment

- Grade 12 and Civil Engineering Diploma, B. Tech, or Degree in Civil Engineering.
- A minimum of 5 - 10 years experience with a qualification in the Engineering Materials Laboratory
- Or 15 - 25 years experience in the Engineering Material Laboratory with SANAS 17025 Laboratory Certificate
