Summary
U-turn is a leading organisation in developing pathways out of homelessness. We are looking for a Warehouse & Retail Supervisor to join our Warehouse team in Tygerberg from 1 May 2025. This is a full-time position and will initially be offered as a one-year contract.
This position
There is an opportunity for a Warehouse & Retail Supervisor position with U-turn Homeless Ministries. The position plays a crucial role in ensuring the efficient and organized operation of a warehouse, contributing to the overall success of the business. This position is suitable for someone who is dedicated to empowering others to reach their full potential and therefore leading by example in this regard is of the utmost importance.
Background
U-turn is a thriving non-profit that exists to equip homeless people with the skills to overcome homelessness. Founded in 1997, we believe that every homeless individual is intrinsically valuable and should have access to an effective pathway to address their physical, spiritual and emotional needs so they can leave the streets and become a long-term productive member of society.
To help people overcome homelessness we operate a phased approach that includes addiction rehabilitation, counselling, life-skills training and sheltered work placement in one of our social enterprises. Through this process, the programme inculcates a healthy work ethic, furnishes modern job skills and gives 18-24 months of real work experience so that individuals can be gainfully employed in the modern South African economy.
Our graduates enter the open market employment and show an above 85% long term success rate! We are actively working to expand to more locations in Cape Town and across South Africa.
Social Enterprises
Actual work-experience largely takes place within our social enterprises. U-turns social enterprises comprise an extensive retail network connected to our Charity Stores as well as other companies owned by, or in partnership with, U-turn.
Key areas of responsibility
Team Leadership and Support:
- Lead and support a team of individuals with a history of homelessness, helping them develop essential work skills, set goals, and thrive in the labour market.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to help team members build confidence, work ethics, and professional skills.
Stock Coordination and Management:
- Work closely with retail managers across U-turn to coordinate new stock arrivals, assist in stock selection, and manage stock-related communications.
- Send out stock lists, verification sheets, and ensure smooth coordination for the selection and distribution of stock.
- Handle incoming deliveries and donations, ensuring the accuracy of contents against invoices or orders.
Order Fulfilment and Distribution:
- Prepare outgoing orders by ensuring correct items are packed, labelled, and shipped accordingly.
- Assist with the packing and distribution of all online product orders.
- Coordinate the preparation of items for customer collections, ensuring that they are packed securely and labelled accurately.
Stock Tracking and Inventory Management:
- Maintain accurate records of stock levels across various categories (Clothing, Furniture, Purchased Goods, Consignment Items, Bric-A-Brac).
- Conduct regular stock counts and stocktakes, ensuring inventory is accurately recorded and up-to-date on relevant platforms (e.g., Facebook Marketplace).
- Investigate and resolve discrepancies identified during stock checks.
Warehouse Organization and Safety:
- Organize and optimize the warehouse floor and sorting rooms to ensure efficient use of space.
- Oversee the loading and unloading of stock to and from delivery vehicles, following safety protocols to prevent accidents or damage.
- Ensure the warehouse is clean and organized, with daily maintenance tasks such as sweeping floors, removing debris, and ensuring clear aisles.
- Assist in maintaining safety protocols, particularly around the proper storage of hazardous materials.
Team Collaboration and Communication:
- Lead and collaborate with other team members, including warehouse assistants, champs, logistics managers, and delivery drivers, to ensure smooth coordination and problem resolution.
- Act as the primary point of contact for all stock-related issues and ensure clear communication between all departments.
Customer Interaction:
- Provide friendly and helpful customer service to contribute to a positive experience for all parties involved in transactions and warehouse operations.
- Engage with customers daily via Messenger, answering inquiries, resolving issues, and ensuring a positive experience.
Retail Shop Operations:
- Oversee the daily operations of the retail shop, ensuring smooth functioning and stock management.
- Ensure all stock in the retail shop is photographed and accurately loaded onto the Facebook Marketplace for online sales.
- Manage daily interactions with customers, responding promptly to messages and inquiries via Facebook Messenger.
Adherence to Policies:
- Ensure all tasks are performed in compliance with U-turns policies and procedures related to stock management, safety, and security.
- Follow specific guidelines for handling various types of products and safely operating warehouse equipment.
Experience and Skills
- 3 - 5 years in a warehouse environment or similar logistics role is essential.
- Must have a good understanding and experience in logistics and distribution coordination
- Strong understanding and experience in logistics, distribution coordination, and stock management.
- Proven ability to lead and mentor teams, particularly those with diverse backgrounds, such as individuals who have experienced homelessness.
- Excellent organizational skills with a keen attention to detail.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with experience managing customer inquiries via Messenger and other online platforms.
- Ability to manage inventory systems and perform stock audits.
- Commitment to maintaining a clean, organized, and safe working environment.
