Junior Hygiene Manager

Role description (overview)

Primary responsibility to monitor and ensure that hygiene and quality standards are upheld in all departments in compliance to relevant standards, regulations and customer requirements. Developing, implementing and improving the health and safety plans, programmes and procedures.

Minimum Requirements

  • 5 years working experience in meat related field.
  • At least 2years managerial experience in a similar position.
  • Tertiary Qualification related to science ( Degree will be an added Advantage).
  • Basic Food Safety Training.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, food safety regulations and Standards and OHS Act.
  • Computer Literate.

Key performance areas

  • Monitoring and ensuring that hygiene and quality standards are upheld in all departments in compliance with GMP, Meat Safety 40 of 2000, ISO 22000:2018 and FSSC22000.
  • Assisting in the implementation and continuous development of the Food Safety Management System in compliance with the appropriate Legislation, standards and customer requirements.
  • Ensuring that the Abattoir Registration Certificate, R638 Certificate of Acceptability and Hides and skins approval are up to date and displayed in designated areas.
  • Coordinating the Hygiene Controllers and cleaners to ensure that their duties are executed efficiently.
  • Ensure that Food safety and Hygiene monitoring checklists are completed, up to date and filed appropriately.
  • Maintain detailed cleaning instructions and schedules for every hygiene activity to meet requirements of the food safety standards.
  • Conduct internal audit of the FSMS against ISO/TS 22002-1, complete audit reports and follow up close outs thereof.
  • Provide training awareness on relevant procedures for the Hygiene Controllers and cleaners.
  • Assist in conducting new employee induction training and annual refresher training for all staff.
  • Ensure that waste disposal is done when the condemned material truck is full and general waste is properly disposed.
  • Assist in implementing Meat Traders OHS plans and strategies and ensure compliance with the OHS Act.
  • Coordinate the OHS committee and ensure the development and adherence to OHS policies and procedures.
  • Develop and implement emergency preparedness and response procedures.
  • Assist with Assist with the rehabilitation of employees after accidents or injuries.
  • Raise management and staff awareness of safety accountability and responsibilities.
  • Record and report hazards, near misses, accidents and unsafe work conditions, study causes and recommend remedial action.
  • Plan and coordinate emergency procedures such as evacuation drills and conduct internal audits and assist with external audits.
